In questi ultimi anni anche il nostro lato del mondo ha vissuto e sofferto gli effetti reali dell’emergenza climatica: i fiumi si sono prosciugati, i ghiacciai si sono sciolti, gli incendi hanno distrutto boschi e campi, mentre trombe d’aria, piogge e grandinate hanno creato importanti danni a strutture e ambienti. Quello che solitamente avveniva in luoghi lontani si è mostrato prepotentemente anche a noi, scoperchiando le nostre debolezze e le nostre paure. Di fronte a questa incertezza sul futuro e alla consapevolezza che il pianeta sia per tutti noi “un’unica casa da preservare”, vogliamo comunque ricordare come siano sempre i più poveri a subire le conseguenze più devastanti del cambiamento climatico. L’emergenza che stiamo vivendo ha infatti i suoi effetti più gravi in Africa, nel Corno d’Africa e nell’Africa subsahariana dove non piove da ormai 4 stagioni, in Pakistan, sommerso dalle alluvioni e dove CESVI opera da oltre 15 anni, e in Myanmar, considerato (secondo il Global Climate Risk Index 2021) il secondo Paese al mondo più soggetto a eventi climatici estremi e calamità naturali collegati ai cambiamenti climatici, e dove siamo presenti dal 2001.
Questi disastri naturali colpiscono in maniera preoccupante la Dry Zone, regione dove vive il 19% dell’intera popolazione del Myanmar e d’importanza strategica per la produzione agricola e nel garantire la sicurezza alimentare del Paese. Sicurezza alimentare messa sempre più a rischio dal cambiamento climatico: la regione è a forte rischio di inondazioni violente, sperimenta lunghi periodi di siccità e registra bassissimi livelli di precipitazioni durante tutto l’arco dell’anno. L’insieme di questi fattori ha un grave impatto sulla produzione agricola e, di conseguenza, porta ad una diminuzione del reddito e della sicurezza alimentare delle famiglie. I più colpiti sono i bambini. Voci disperate delle persone della Dry Zone con cui CESVI opera quotidianamente, ci raccontano che cosa vuol dire convivere con la precarietà dell’emergenza climatica ed è quello che vogliamo mostrarvi con questa mostra. In Myanmar la situazione è estremamente drammatica e preoccupante. I cambiamenti climatici e il degrado ambientale stanno influenzando la frequenza e la gravità dei disastri naturali nel Paese. La perdita di ecosistemi naturali, l’aumento delle temperature medie annuali e la diminuzione delle precipitazioni sono fattori che aumentano l’impatto dei disastri naturali sulla popolazione, in gran parte dipendente dall’agricoltura.
Noi di CESVI, da quasi 40 anni ci occupiamo di emergenza climatica. Abbiamo attualmente progetti in altri 5 Paesi, oltre il Myanmar, in Somalia, Kenya, Etiopia, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, dove aiutiamo le persone a contrastare gli effetti dei cambiamenti climatici nelle loro vite.

In the last few years, our side of the world also experienced and suffered the real effects of the climate emergency: rivers dried up, glaciers melted, fires destroyed forests and fields, while tornadoes, rain, and hailstorms created major damage to structures and environments. What used to happen in faraway places has shown itself powerfully to us as well, uncovering our weaknesses and fears. In the face of this uncertainty about the future and the knowledge that the planet is for all of us ‘one home to preserve’, we still want to remember how it is always the poorest who suffer the most devastating consequences of climate change. The emergency we are currently experiencing has its most serious effects in Africa, in the Horn of Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, where it has not rained for four seasons now, in Pakistan, which has been flooded and where CESVI has been working for more than 15 years, and in Myanmar, considered (according to the Global Climate Risk Index 2021) the second country in the world most prone to extreme climatic events and natural disasters linked to climate change, and where we have been present since 2001.
These natural disasters worryingly affect the Dry Zone, a region where 19% of the entire population of Myanmar and of strategic importance for the agricultural production and to guarantee the country’s food security. Food security is increasingly threatened by climate change: the region is at high risk of violent flooding, experiences long periods of drought and very low levels of rainfall throughout the year. The combination of these factors has a serious impact on agricultural production and consequently leads to a decrease in household income and food security. The worst affected are the children. Desperate voices of the people in the Dry Zone with whom CESVI works daily tell us what it is like to live with the precariousness of the climate emergency and that is what we want to show you with this exhibition. In Myanmar, the situation is extremely dramatic and worrying. Climate change and environmental degradation are influencing the frequency and severity of natural disasters in the country. The loss of natural ecosystems, rising average annual temperatures and decreasing rainfall are factors that increase the impact of natural disasters on the population, which is largely dependent on agriculture.
We of CESVI have been working on the climate emergency for almost 40 years. We currently have projects in five other countries, besides Myanmar, in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Pakistan and Zimbabwe, where we help people to counter the effects of climate change in their lives.
